Abstract The multitouch functionality of tabletop computers is often augmented by the use of tangible objects that offer an intuitive and haptic alternative to interaction and manipulation. However, employing tangibles can also lead to less desirable effects, such as occlusion or lack of precision. In this paper we highlight the design and implementation of ring-like tangible objects: TangibleRings. They do not occlude the objects underneath them and also support the detection of touch events inside their perimeter. Additionally, multiple rings may be nested within one another in order to combine ring functionality or produce more complex filters.

Tabletop 3D Object Manipulation with Touch and Tangibles

Tabletop environments are ideal for collaborative activities that involve moving and arranging objects. However, manipulating 3D virtual objects through the 2D interface is challenging because users’ 2D actions must be translated into 3D actions. We explore the use of touch and tangibles to aid collaboration and 3D object manipulation. Our user study shows that using touch and tangible interact...

Beyond Actuated Tangibles: Introducing Robots to Interactive Tabletops

Tangible user interfaces (TUIs) have been shown to support interaction on tabletops and interactive surfaces. We propose integrating robots as interactive partners in tabletop interfaces. We suggest a continuum of physical interfaces on interactive tabletops, starting from static tabletop TUIs, progressing to actuated TUIs and ending with small social tabletop robots that provide an engaging, p...

On stage: the reactable and other musical tangibles go real

This paper explores one of the application domains in which tangible and tabletop interfaces have currently shown more positive results, studying and unveiling the essential reasons that turn live music performance and tabletop interaction into promising and exiting fields of multi-disciplinary research and experimentation. The paper is structured in three parts. The first one exposes the main ...

RoMo: Avoiding Conflicts Between the Physical and Digital Model in Tabletop Interfaces with Robotic Tangibles

In TUIs, physical/digital conflicts can occur when the digital model does not match the model implied by the spatial layout of tangibles. We show how tangible tabletop interfaces (TTI) can be modified to allow robot movement of tangibles, thereby avoiding conflicts. We present RoMo, an open source Java library that allow existing TTI applications to perform robot movement, and demonstrate its f...

Kolab: appropriation & improvisation in mobile tangible collaborative interaction

Current design guidelines for conventional tangible systems suggest that the representational significance of tangible tokens is an important consideration in the design of tangible interaction, especially in collaborative contexts. Such advice might be assumed to imply that nomadic systems that employ improvised tokens are liable to have highly impaired usability. In this paper we describe Kol...
